Marian Chertow
Associate Professor of Industrial Environmental Management, Director of the Program on Solid Waste Policy, and Director of the Industrial Environmental Management Program

Marian Chertow has been the Director of the IEM program since 1991, and is the original faculty organizer of the Corporate Environmental Leadership Seminar. Prior to that, she worked for ten years in state and local government and environmental business. Since 1995, she has led a project on the future of environmental policy, and is co-editor with Daniel Esty of Thinking Ecologically: The Next Generation of Environmental Policy (Yale University Press, 1997).

Thomas Graedel
Clifton R. Musser Professor Emeritus of Industrial Ecology, Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering

Thomas Graedel is the Clifton R. Musser Professor of Industrial Ecology. The co-author of the first textbook on the subject (Industrial Ecology, Prentice Hall, 1995), he has since written three more books and a number of scholarly articles on aspects of industrial ecology. His environmental assessment matrix, developed during a 27-year career with AT&T Bell Laboratories, is now a standard industrial tool for streamlined life-cycle assessments of the environmental attributes of products, processes, and facilities.

Arnulf Grubler
Professor in the Field of Energy and Technology

Arnulf’s research and teaching interests focus on the interplay between energy and technology systems and their implications on the environment, in particular on climate change. Both his research and teaching embrace a truly long-term view. He has studied major transitions in energy and technology systems that occurred during the last 300 years and is also an energy/environment futurist serving as lead author for the two major 100-year scenario studies available to date: Prof. Grubler is a resident faculty member every fall term. The remainder of the year he is senior research scholar at IIASA, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg, Austria.

Edgar Hertwich
Director, Center for Industrial Ecology

Edgar Hertwich is professor at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Previously, he served as Director of the Industrial Ecology Program at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He is author of the Carbon Footprint of Nations. Since 2007, he serves on the International Resource Panel and has directed two studies, Priority Products and Materials and Clean Energy Choices. He was a lead author of the energy chapter of the IPCC 5th assessment report.

Barbara Reck
Research Scientist

Barbara Reck is a Research Scientist at Yale’s Center for Industrial Ecology who studies metals from a sustainable resource management perspective. Her work includes detailed life cycle characterizations of nickel and stainless steel across various spatial and temporal scales, studies of metal recycling efficiencies, and the current and future criticality of metals. Prior to her time at Yale, she worked for seven years at Lufthansa German Airlines as manager in environmental affairs.

Jon Powell
Class year 2018, Advisor Marian Chertow

Jon comes to the CIE with more than a decade of experience as a researcher, consultant, entrepreneur, and professional engineer (Connecticut, Florida, and Puerto Rico) in the waste and materials management sector. His dissertation research, conducted under the direction of Prof. Marian Chertow, seeks to bring to bear the benefits of informatics – the practice of developing, analyzing, and transforming new, large, and varied data sets into knowledge for organizations and society – to significantly enhance the management of wasted materials across multiple sectors. In particular, Jon’s research will lead to the development of new, robust databases that will reveal material-focused industrial symbiosis opportunities in the US, inclusive of existing stocks of non-hazardous production and municipal wastes and newly-generated materials.

Paul Wolfram
Class year 2021, Advisor Edgar Hertwich

Peter Berrill is working on understanding the flows of materials and environmental impacts associated with energy systems. His research utilizes Life Cycle Assessment and Input Output Analysis. In addition to studying the effects of energy scenarios and energy policy alternative, Peter is also researching the user/demand side of the energy system and ways in which we can better understand sustainable consumption of energy. His last publication dealt with LCA impacts of electricity scenarios for Europe in 2050 with explicit consideration of energy storage and grid transmission. Before coming to the Center for Industrial Ecology at Yale, Peter worked at the Industrial Ecology Programme in NTNU, Norway, and studied at Waseda University, Universiteit Leiden, and TU Delft.
