The global population is expected to grow by more than 20% until 2050, at the same time when greenhouse gas emissions need to be substantially reduced to avert the most grave consequences of climate change. Yet, most food production relies on the use of manure and synthetic nitrogen fertilisers, whose production and use account for approximately 5% of global emissions. In this talk, I will present a global mapping of fertilisers production, use and emissions. This mapping is then used to quantify the mitigation potential of various interventions to reduce emissions of fertilisers without loss of crop productivity.
